ARTISANAL + MODERN
FAR + WIDE COLLECTIVE is an online shop that is as unique as it is thoughtful in its approach to retail and the items that it creates and sells. Both promoting and elevating craft from post-conflict and emerging countries, F+W believes in supporting individual craft producers and small businesses through fair trade. Its mission is to help build a more sustainable infrastructure in developing economies by connecting artisans in emerging countries to the international market. With this business structure, Far + Wide Collective is creating an organizational support system and market access for the artisans it represents. Above image: YELLOW COTTON TOWEL FROM ETHIOPIA
Founder and creator Hedvig Alexander started F+W four years ago after moving to Canada by way of Afghanistan, where she worked and lived for seven years. Her job in Kabul was working for the NGO Turquoise Mountain, which aims to revive traditional Afghan crafts and create jobs for the people of Afghanistan. I met Hedvig in Toronto when she was starting F+W. I helped her create her brand and curated and refined her product assortment. We also connected Canadian designers with skilled artisans from far away countries and fostered their collaboration. As F+W grew and expanded over the past four years, we designed and produced seasonal lines that are unique to the F+W label. It was a pleasure working with Hedvig and her team, and I am so proud of the work that they do. F+W continues to succeed in elevating craft, while bringing support to artisans around the world. Their hard work has paid off, as they continue to present a unique, modern and special offering in their online and wholesale business. The items featured in this story are from their Spring/Summer 2017 line, and I love having each piece in my island home. It’s truly a special brand and I urge you to shop the story and browse the F+W website for more information about who they are, the craftspeople they work with, and the other items that they feature.
